Elvira's dad has been away for three years fighting the Germans. It is May 1918 and she is miserable without him. Her stepmother only finds fault with her and Elvira despises the village teacher. She is overjoyed when she and her orphaned friend find "The Sanctuary", a house hidden from view in a grove of trees. The Sanctuary, Elvira realized, could be her home if she decides to run away. She could get away from her unpleasant stepmother and all the endless chores. Someone else is seeking a hiding place though... a German prisoner of war. Does Elvira learn to trust the German prisoner? (Amy Schaffner, amy.schaffner@risd.org, librarian) |
