A bedraggled, malnourished racehorse abandoned in Korea. US Marines exhausted from carrying equipment for a specialized rifle. Doesn't seem like this story could have a happy ending, does it? But Sergeant Reckless, as she became known, not only carried munitions for the troops, she stole their hearts. The Marines found this skinny mare and decided to try to turn her into a pack horse. She was a quick learner, had a large appetite and knew which Marines kept sweets in their tents! She marched bravely into battle over and over was the first, and only, animal ever to be given a rank in the military. With illustrations by Iacopo Bruno that bring the story to life, young readers will never forget this special horse.  (Prepared by: Barbara Stewart Zinkovich, OP Earle Elementary School, Landrum, SC for South Carolina Book Award)
