The crow population of the small town of Auburn, Pennsylvania increases from 212 to 3,582 in a day. And then the crows keep coming. For Leighton Barnes, the crows are a distraction and comfort. Leighton’s former high school football star father is becoming increasingly angry and violent towards her mother and sisters, but in ways that no one outside of their house can see. He throws picture frames and breaks windows, but the objects are mysteriously restored by morning. How can you know that a family is broken if they live in a house that keeps repairing itself? Though college is in sight, Leighton must balance her desire to be free with her feelings of responsibility to her younger sisters. The sisters bond with the birds as Leighton writes stories for her school paper about the crows’ arrival and the town’s reaction. Leighton needs to know: why would the crows stay in Auburn if they have the wings to fly away?
