Joyce doesn't have any friends.  It's not because she doesn't want any.  She lives with her uncle at the town dump and all the kids at school call her the Dump Queen and make fun of her.  She has lived with her uncle, Old Dad, since her mother left years before.  Old Dad is  known as the Ape Man to the kids.  He looks a bit different and spends all his time working in the dump.  Joyce is used to being friendless but when a new girl starts in the school and starts talking to her, Joyce begins to think she may have a friend after all.  But that is not to be.  Her only friend turns out to be the substitute custodian, Mrs. Fish.  The kids all call her Crazy Fish but Joyce sees beyond the wild clothes and eccentric behavior.
