Nine-year old William and his little sister Elinor are having a rough time. Their dad has decided to leave the family so that he can go and write. This is very upsetting for everyone. On the day William’s dad leaves, his mom does something unexpected. She tells William and Elinor that they are going to get a dog, which is something their dad would never let them have. But when they get to the shelter, they get not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR dogs. And a cat. And there is something strange about these animals. It seems as if they are able to…talk. But the only one who can hear them is 4-year-old Elinor. It is almost like…magic. Elinor hopes William will be able to hear them, too. And everyone hopes to figure out a way to put their family back together. To find out if this magic will help William’s family, read Waiting for the Magic by Patricia MacLachlan.
