Originally published in 1952, this story will still appeal to 21st century children.  Nancy and her sister Plum are orphans who are sent to live at Mrs. Monday's Boarding Home for Children.  Life is hard for the girls but they are determined not to let it get to them.  They daydream about having the perfect Christmas and having a family to call their own.  That's not too much to hope for, is it?
