Twelve-year-old Lily lives in Maine with her maternal grandparents above their general store. One day when her blind dog goes running off, Lily meets Salma, whose family are migrant farm workers picking blueberries for the season. Despite their different backgrounds, the two girls become friends and work together to raise money for surgery to restore the vision of Lily’s dog, Lucky. Their friendship is put to the test when Salma decides to enter the town’s Blueberry Queen pageant, something no Hispanic girl has ever done. Tensions rise as the pageant approaches and Lily must face some difficult situations and decisions, as she learns things about the town she lives in and herself. For grades 4 and up.
