Since she has no brothers, Rasmira has been trained all her life to take over for her father, the chief of the village, when it was time to do so. This allowed her to train to become a warrior, the only girl in her village pursuing such an occupation. Not everyone is thrilled with her decision and so during the final test that allows her to complete her training, Rasmira is sabotaged and fails. The punishment for failure is exile forever unless some impossible task given to them is completed. Rasmira is tasked with killing the god they pay tribute to each year. Even if she didn’t have to do the impossible, she still has to survive. Outside of the villages is incredibly dangerous, filled with poisonous plants and deadly monsters. Armed with her warrior skills and a few supplies, she is nevertheless sent out to kill their god. Rasmira is determined to be the first to do such a thing. However, she hadn’t anticipated meeting banished people from other villages, or that they would want to help her have an easier time surviving the forest. It is clear that she will need their help if she wants to live. Can she overcome what happened to her in the trial and learn to trust someone again? Without them, she won’t survive long enough to get close to the god. But with them, could she have a chance? (Oklahoma Sequoyah Book Awards, 2021)
