The second book in the Monument series finds the children going their separate ways trying to figure out how to survive the disaster.  Several of the children have taken the school bus and set off for Denver airport.  Rumors have spread that there is help at the airport and that anyone who gets there will be evacuated.  The children who turn into monsters with exposure to the chemicals decide to stay at the store so they won't accidentally hurt the others.  This means that Dean and Alex are taking separate paths.  Alex is on the bus and we learn about their trip through him.  Dean must stay at the store with Astrid and some of the children.  Both groups must fight for survival as they are attacked by outsiders and become discouraged about their ability to continue.  Their only hope is that the bus will get the kids to Denver in time.
