When
England goes to war in 1914, Johnny likes to fight battles with his wooden
soldiers his father has made for him. He is excited when his father
enlists and leaves London to fight the war at the front in France.
But then Johnny is sent to the English countryside to live with his aunt.
He hates school, and no one talks to him. At least he has his armies
he can command and the letters from Father always contain new recruits.
But things started to change. Father’s letters and toy soldiers grow
more bleak and dark. And something strange begins to happen, he notices
his pretend battles begin to mirror those at the front......before they
happened.
Can Johnny really be controlling the fate of the war? Will he be
able to protect his father so that he will be home in time for Christmas?
And is the mysterious solider who appears in the garden during his battles
a ghost?
Read, Lord of the Nutcracker Men, to find the answers to these questions.
