With the Civil War over and Reconstruction beginning, Billy decides it's time to head out in search of his father.  He knows that his father is out west so Billy leaves his Missouri home to head west.  After he loses all his money, he meets up with some men who convince Billy that they best way to get there is to sign up as a teamster to drive oxen across the country.  It is a very hard life and Billy finds himself facing danger as well as adventure.  Billy may not be fearless but he does have the desire to survive.
