Michelle only has one month until graduation. But instead of thinking about prom, summer jobs, and college orientation, she has to figure out how to stretch her Taco Bell paycheck to cover rent, her sister’s insulin, and bail money for her mom, all while making sure her little brother doesn’t get expelled from school thanks to his imaginary friend’s anger issues. When she unexpectedly finds out out that the half-sister her father chose over them is not only white but has been living in the lap of luxury all these years, she decides she’s going to give her dad a piece of her mind. Unfortunately, he’s on the other side of the country and dying. But Michelle has a car with as much spunk as she does, a full tank of gas, and a backseat full of siblings. What could possibly go wrong? (Prepared by: Marti Brown, Westwood High School, martbrown@richland2.org , South Carolina Young Adult Book Award, 2018)
