In 17th century Scotland, 16 year old Maggie and her grandmother are living is utter poverty.  Her grandmother is a grumpy woman who curses the neighbors.  When a neighbor child dies, the town turns on the two women and declare them witches and sentences them to be hung.  Maggie is able to escape and is taken in by her uncle's family.  But has Maggie found herself in yet another bad position?  Her uncle is a Convenanter, a righteous brand of Scottish Presbyterian who refuses to recognize England's rule.
