Life in 1905 was very different for young girls than it is today.  For one thing, Amanda's father had to approve her friends.  As the minister of the church, he knew just about everyone in Cape Light.  When young Jed Langford starts attending the church and it becomes clear that he has eyes for Amanda, her father puts his foot down.  Amanda is not to see that boy.  She is only 13 and much too young for courting.  But Amanda and Jed secretly keep up their relationship through letters.  When Amanda's father finds out, look out!
