A long time ago, stories were told in the form of epic poems.  These were very long poems that told a whole story about a person or an event.  One of the oldest surviving epic poem is that of Beowulf.  The story of the hero Beowulf was probably first told in the 6th century but was not written down until two hundred years later.  The story is more than a thousand years old!  Beowulf was a very brave man who did some amazing things in his life.  This is the story of his battle with the terrible monster Grendel.
