Booktalk #1

Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfell, is cursed. He’s doomed to repeat the autumn of his 18th year until he finds true love. Each time he fails, he is turned into a vicious beast hell-bent on destroying his castle, family, and very nearly his kingdom. After so many failures, Emberfell and his people are barely hanging on. Harper Lacy is always being underestimated. Her life in Washington, DC, is no walk in the park, but she’s learned to be tough and not let anything hold her back, including her cerebral palsy or the death of her mother. When she’s sucked into Rhen’s world, nothing seems to make sense, yet as she spends more time with Rhen in his kingdom, she begins to realize what’s at stake. As Rhen discovers that Harper is not like the other girls, he begins to hope again. But there are powerful forces at work, and it will take more than just a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his kingdom.

Booktalk #2

Imagine being in the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC. Your mother is dying, and your brother is involved in some not so legal activities to keep your family together. Oh! By the way, you have cerebral palsy which affects your walking.  Now imagine a brute taking you away to a land where castles and swords are the norm. It is not modern times! You are not asleep, so how is all of this happening. Now in this strange land of Emberfall, this brute by the name of Grey introduces you to a prince. Not any ordinary prince, but a prince who turns into a wild beast. How are you supposed to save the day? Brigid Kemmerer’s tale is a cross between the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast and Groundhog Day. If you love adventure and fantasy, check out A Curse So Dark and Lonely. Booktalk #3

This re-telling of Beauty and the Beast is anything but standard. Prince Rhen is cursed by a hideous witch. He must relive the same season of his 18th birthday over and over again until he finds someone to fall in love with him. And at the end of that season he becomes a ferocious beast who kills everyone in sight. When he comes out of it, he is left to deal with the consequences of the beast’s actions and start all over again finding love. Grey is his Captain of the Guard who is tasked with going into another world and bringing back potential loves for Rhen. This time, his wooing of a potential lady is interrupted by Harper, so he brings her back instead. She is definitely NOT the kind of girl Rhen would like to have fall in love with him. She’s not that pretty, opinionated, and too smart for her own good. Can she help Rhen break this spell and reclaim his kingdom? (Oklahoma Sequoyah Book Awards, 2021)
