In 1901, 12-year-old Callie Tate lives in rural Texas with her parents, grandfather, and six brothers. While she loves to study animals as a scientist, her younger, big hearted brother Travis wants to take care of them, and by the time he gives them a name it is too late, he has made them his pet. When Travis hears whimpering inside a tree, he reaches in and discovers an abandoned soft, silky baby skunk, he names it Stinky. Reluctantly, Callie helps him secretly care for the helpless kit. However, when he finds the runt of this litter hiding in the same tree, barely alive, he needs Callie’s help even more. How will he hide the weak kit Winky, from their vigilant mother, and can he save it? Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award 2018-2019 |
