Katherine Johnson was a NASA mathematician who is credited with helping land the first man on the moon. What’s remarkable about her is that she was not only female, but African American, and she grew up in the south in the era of Jim Crow laws, segregated schooling, and rampant racial discrimination. Despite these challenges, Johnson went on to go to college and become a research mathematician. You’ve seen her featured in the movie Hidden Figures, now read her story in her own words. In Reaching for the Moon, Johnson relatably tells the tale of overcoming every obstacle to become one of the most important scientists in the history of NASA. (Oklahoma Sequoyah Book Awards, 2021)
