Summer was going to be fun with her friends, but now twelve-year-old Candace and her mother are stuck in Lambert, South Carolina. With nothing to do, she might as well poke around her grandmother’s attic. Wow! Candice discovers a box with a letter that sends her and her friend, Brandon, on a mission to unlock the secret of her grandmother’s past and maybe to find a fortune! They are very resourceful using libraries, people and old newspapers to solve a tragedy of long ago. This is not an easy task. The mysterious benefactor has tried hard to conceal his identity. Others have searched but given up. Some don’t want the events of the past dug up, but the children know that they must succeed! The story is set in the present day but includes flashbacks to the 1950’s. You will see that some things such as racism and bullying are not quite gone.
