Booktalk #1

When you find it, does that make it yours?   Karma is a 13-year-old homeschooler living in the wilds of Montana. She is mesmerized and driven to become an apprentice falconer. Training Stark, a rescued falcon, is her obsession. Her love of birds comes from her father, the owner of a bird sanctuary.  During a birding demonstration, Karma’s momentary distraction unsettles Stark who nails her. Striking just above her gloved hand, blood oozes out of her forearm. A harsh lesson. Distractions can be dangerous. When Stark’s owner is located, Karma’s father insists on returning the bird. They, along with Karma’s younger brother, embark on a four-day journey to return Stark to her owner.  Stopping for gas along the way, they meet Cooper, a young teen hitchhiker. Giving him a brief ride, they part as the family is heading in another direction. Turning down an alternative road proves to be a disastrous decision. They become lost. The tire blows. The vehicle crashes. Injuries and escape.  Stark is loose. Karma’s father and brother, injured. Karma must strike out on her own for help. As she ventures out, questions seep into her mind. How does a perfectly good tire just blow out?  What was with Cooper’s odd behavior when they parted ways? Will Stark return? (New Hampshire Great Stone Face nominee, 2018-2019)

Booktalk #2

Karma is a thirteen-year-old homeschooler living and working at her family's Birds-ofPrey Education Center. She loves the birds and rarely talks of anything except them and falconry. She badly wants to become a certified falconer and is hoping to get her apprentice license when she turns fourteen. After a series of events, Karma, her younger brother Gavin and their dad must head to Canada to return her young gyrfalcon, Stark, to her rightful owner. Karma is not happy and the trip turns from bad to worse after a crash in the backcountry of Montana. Karma must use all her skills and strength to find help in this edge-of-your seat outdoor adventure.  (Vermont DCF Award nominee, 2018-2019)
