Do you like spiders? I sure don’t. I am scared to DEATH of spiders of any kind or size!  Well, would you believe there is one in Africa that is 12 inches wide? It’s so big it eats birds! I think my heart would stop if I saw one that big! 12 inches is HUGE—and, speaking of 12 inches, can you imagine an eyeball of any creature being that big? Well, the squid’s eyes are that big—scary and unbelievable, isn’t it? Hey and while we are on the subject of amazing things, did you know that there is an African frog that weighs 7 pounds? That’s bigger than my cat! There are a lot of wild facts out there about creatures, but sometimes just hearing these facts and figures isn’t enough. Sometimes these facts and figures go in and out one ear. Sometimes the only way you can really grasp what something is like is to see it for yourself. And you can…just open up the nonfiction book, Actual Size, by Caldecott Honor author Steve Jenkins and you can see for yourself these amazing life size depictions of real animals!  (Prepared by: Sally Ficklen for SCASL Picture Book Awards, 2007-2008)
