Cynnie doesn't exactly have the ideal life.  Her mother is an alcoholic and has a series of boyfriends who move in and out rapidly.  Even though she is only 13, Cynnie is the primary caretaker of her 3 year old brother.  Bill has Downs syndrome and Cynnie does the best she can.  But it isn't enough.  Her grandparents take custody of Bill and Cynnie is devastated.  To mask the pain, Cynnie does what she has seen her mother do so many times -- she starts to drink to excess.
