THE
END OF THE RACE
New
York : Macmillan, 1993.
IL 5-8 |
This
book takes place in the 1960's when blacks and whites didn't get along.
This is, except for two kids named Jared Olsen and Davin Carter. These
friends are both 400 meter dash runners on their summer track team. Jared
was the quickest out of the two and when Davin's dad found out, he turned
furious. From that point on, Davin turned into a competitor and not Jared's
friend -- instead, his worst enemy. Also, during this brutal competition,
Davin would trash talk Jared by calling him "Whitey" and other harmful
names. One day while biking together, Jared suddenly loses his temper with
Davin and then it turned bitter. (Read p. 76). To find out if Jared gets
help in time to save Davin's life, you should read THE END OF THE RACE
by Dean Hughes. (Billy H., 8th grade student, Rundlett Middle School, Concord,
New Hampshire) |
