On April 9, 1865, the church bells rang out all over Washington.  As people heard the news, the whole town celebrated.  Word had come that the horrible Civil War was over.  President Lincoln had been successful and ended the war that had divided the country.  The celebration would turn to mourning just a few days later when the unthinkable happened.  Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14th.  No one could understand why he was shot.  The war was over.  It was time to rebuild.  But now the country was now divided again over the assassination.  Holzer looks at the reasons behind this awful act.
