This
fictional account of a German landing on US shores during World War II
was well-researched by the author of Rocket Boys (October Sky). Josh Thurlow,
the lighthouse keeper’s son, is commander of a small coast guard boat that
protects Killakeet Island on the North Carolina Coast. Josh is haunted
by an event of his childhood that resulted in the loss of his younger brother.
When the German threat becomes all too real for Killakeet and its inhabitants,
a ragtag group forms to defend the island. In the end, Josh finds love
and redemption, and the mystery of his brother’s disappearance may finally
be solved. The Keeper’s Son, an adventure story with elements of suspense,
battle scenes, and romance, is sure to please high school boys and girls.
