Life in this small Vermont town is about to change forever.  The year is 1924 and the Ku Klux Klan has come to town.  The story is told from a variety of viewpoints so we see how the Klan's presence affects different members of the community.  Young Leonora Sutter is a 12 year old Black girl.  She and her father are the only Blacks in town.  Six year old Esther Hirsh and her father are the only Jews.  Although these young girls are the main targets of the Klan, there are others in the town who are seen as different and targeted by the Klan.  As the days go on, we see how attitudes change and the people change.
