Easter is a young slave who doesn't know who she really is or how old she is. When she escapes the plantation, she is captured by Confederate soldiers and is sent to work in an army camp. She eventually escapes from the camp and makes her way to Sea Islands where she joins other runaway slaves. They are hired to work on a cotton plantation on the Island. When a school is opened up, Easter enrolls and studies hard. She is offered a scholarship to a school in Pennsylvania. Easter must decide whether to stay on the plantation in hopes of being reunited with "family" or move to Pennsylvania to finish her studies. This book tells of what life is like when you have no control.
