When Elizabeth comes home from school for the winter holidays, she finds a note from her guardians, her aunt and uncle, with a cryptic message about sending her away for the holidays.  With nothing more than a bag of laundry, three dollars, and the mysterious directions, Elizabeth arrives at Winterhouse, a grand mansion well above the humble means of her guardians’ ability.  She quickly discovers that things in the mansion are not what they seem, including the vast library and a mysterious couple in black who seem to be hiding malicious intentions.  With the help of her new friend Freddy, a Winterhouse regular, Elizabeth explores the secrets of the house and also learns some surprising truths about herself as well.
