SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER
New York : Bantam, 1986.
IL YA RL 7.4 .
ISBN 014130636X
Twelve year old Patty can't figure out what's wrong with her. Her father thinks that she's talking back when she's only thinking of her options or a better way to do things. Her mom doesn't like her appearance. The only person who seems to like her is the housekeeper Ruth. This situation could be set in any year but it happens to be during World War II. Ruth is Black and 12 year old Patty is Jewish. Her values get tested when a German POW encourages her inquisitive spirit. This book explores the gray areas that separate right and wrong and addresses the issues that teens face when they run up against conflict with family values.
