Thirteen year old Louisa and her best friend Maddie are among the lucky ones. They have to pretend that they are sisters, but Louisa’s parents were able to send them both to an elite boarding school, Country Manor School (CMS), that is far from their Chicago home. The country has been engaged in civil war for years – The United States vs. the Alliance, a rebel faction. Louisa and Maddie have never tasted freedom before; they have only known disaster, destruction, and curfews. They have never been allowed outside alone and school has been essentially non-existent. At CMS, they experience freedom and safety for the first time, but the rules are strict – no Internet, no cellphones, no computers, no TV’s. Many of the classes at CMS involve survival skills and Louisa and Maddie both begin to feel that something is just a little bit off at CMS. Why are they being trained to survive in the wilderness? Why are they not allowed outside contact with the world? CMS may not be the safe haven that everyone believes it is. (Pamela Lowe for Colorado Blue Spruce Award, 2013) |
