This tall story is told from the alternating perspectives of Bernardo, a boy from the Philippines who suffers from gigantism and his sister Andi, a pint-size aspiring basketball player.  Bernardo was left behind when his mother emigrated to the UK.  Although the locals believe that his is a folk hero who protects the town from earthquakes, he believes he has been cursed by the local witches.  When he travels to the UK to be reunited with his mother, he is nervous about people seeing him as a freak.  And Andi is worried about having her older brother living there and starting a new school.
