Ani's story is set during the Spanish Civil War.  Ani works in her family's sardine business and always smells like sardines.  Ani finds her first real friend in Mathais Garca.  Mathais is German and he has left Germany to escape the restrictions placed on Jews by the Nazis.  The two become fast friends and also get involved in the Resistance.  They are fighting for Spain and use the sardines to deliver secret messages. Will these two teenage spies be able to survive the coming war?  What will happen when their sleepy little town is bombed by the Nazis?
