Lidie lives in Brazil with her aunt and uncle. She's a wild girl who rides horses and dreams of one day going to live with her father and older brother in New York. They left Lidie behind when they moved to New York when she was seven, shortly after her mother died. Now Lidie is twelve, and it's time to leave for New York where her father runs a stable at a famous racetrack and her brother is training to be a jockey. Lidie is excited and anxious to finally be joining her family in America. But when she arrives, the obstacles are more than she bargained for. Her limited English leads to big problems at school, and her father and brother still treat her like the seven year old they left behind, buying her Snow White decorations for her rooms and boots with bunnies on them. They don't even know what a strong rider she is. Lidie must show them who she really is, a girl who can befriend, and ride, the new filly her father just bought, the horse known as Wild Girl.
