Orphan Creel is taken in by her daffy aunt’s family after her parents die. Since they are very poor, they leave Creel by the entrance of a local dragon cave. The aunt hopes a rich knight will come along and slay the dragon, marry Creel and invite them all to live in his castle. Things turns out very differently when the local dragon appears and has no interest in Creel or fighting any knights. Instead of gold, he hoards magnificent shoes. Creel befriends him and manages to escape with the dragon’s favorite pair of blue slippers. Then she bravely travels to King’s Seat, hoping to eventually open up a dress shop. In the city she attracts considerable attention because of her lovely blue slippers. Gradually she learns they hold power over the dragon colony. When the slippers get into the wrong hands chaos and evil ensue. Can Creel manage to retrieve her slippers and save the dragons? (Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Awards nominee, 2008-2009) |
