The Civil War was fought in America back in the 1860s.  The conflict pitted the Southern, or Confederate States, against the Northern, or Union States.  When the war began, General Beauregard set up headquarters at the McLean farm in Virginia.  Young Lula McLean still played with her doll as the soldiers came and went.  When it became clear that it was unsafe to stay at their home. Lula's father moved the family into a house further away from the fighting.  Litlle could he have known what role he would have in the Civil War.  This is based on the true story of the McLean family.
