Jim Ugly is a dog. This dog is the loyal companion of Jake’s dad. Jake’s dad was buried less than a week ago, June 3, 1894 in Nevada. Jake and his dad had come to Nevada to stay with Jake’s cousin Aurora and her husband Axie. Jake and his dad left California because a bounty hunter was trying to kill Jake and get some diamonds that were supposedly missing. Jake’s dad had a bullet wound in his shoulder, so he left Jake with his cousin and went to a bigger town looking for a doctor. Jake’s dad never came home. His dad’s dog, Jim Ugly, kept searching for his master. Jake tells the story throughout this book. Here’s Jake talking: (Read some of page 9). When Jake takes the dog to the cemetery, Jim Ugly doesn’t smell his owner’s scent anywhere near the grave site. Jake realizes that the funeral was just a show. The body was never really found.
