to teach him how to read. At first, she is afraid but as she gets to know
Joaquin, she begins to believe in him. He wants to be like Robin Hood and
steal from the rich and give to the poor. Find out how Annyrose helps him
in BANDIT'S MOON.
Booktalk #2
Annyrose thought about all
the bad luck she'd had since setting out for California. Mama had
caught jungle fever crossing Panama and was buried off the coast of Mexico.
All their money was stolen out of her brother's left coat pocket almost
as soon as they got to San Diego. Then, on the way to Sacramento,
she had tripped over her own big feet and broken her ankle. Her brother
had to leave her at the horse ranch of O.O. Mary, the meanest, greediest
Yankee this side of the Mexican border. Worst luck of all, now here
she was begging the terrible Wakeen, the bloodiest bandit of all California,
to take her with him, away from O.O. Mary, to find her brother.
Annyrose's luck begins to
change when Wakeen agrees to let her ride with his gang, as long as she
agrees to teach him to read English in return. There is only one
draw back to her plan. Wakeen thinks she is a boy.
Follow Annyrose on her adventures
with the outlaw Joaquin Murieta, the Robin Hood of the California gold-mining
region of the 1840's in BANDIT'S MOON by Sid Fleischman. (New Hampshire
