Booktalk #1

Have you ever been in a store and someone thought you stole something?  Have you ever been hit by someone you didn't know very well?  Have you ever been treated badly because you look different from others?  Do you see prejudice today in your everyday lives.  Francie certainly did growing up in Noble, Alabama before Civil Rights.  She's a very smart girl who wants a better life.  She tries to help Jesse after he is accused of a crime.  In doing that she endangers her family and friends.  To find out what happens to Francie and Jesse you will have to read "Francie" by Karen English. (Karen Womack, graduate student, <kwomack7@yahoo.com> )

Booktalk #2

Ask participants is they have ever run away from home before.  How did they survive?  How far did they get?  Where did they go?  After this discussion, talk about prejudices and ask for examples.  Has anyone ever encountered anyone who had prejudices and what did he or she do to prevent it?  After questioning, introduce this book and relate to them that the topics that were talked about are the main parts of this book. ("Naomi Bates" <mira93@yahoo.com>)
