GATE OF IVORY
New York : DAW, 1989.
Theodora of Pyrene ends up on Ivory long after her pleasure cruise should be over. She becomes part of the underworld reading palms, when a stranger hires her for a private job. Theodora meets Ran Cormalon who is limited by a curse his grandmother placed on him. He must have a female companion to complete his magical power -- he has just chosen Theodora. When it becomes clear that someone is out to ruin Ran, it also becomes clear that Theodora's life is in danger as well. Theodora's resourcefulness is not limited by awareness of cultural roles as Ran's is, so she helps them survive some inhospitable visits to some pretty strange outposts on their way to Ran's home base. A weird combination of computers an the occult make this book fun to read.
