 It's been 9 months since the survivors of Ember arrived in Sparks.  The villagers have been good hosts even though feeding and housing that many new citizens has been a strain.  And now winter is closing in.  There is little food and medicine.  Doon and Lina make a desparate decision.  They will secretly return to Ember and search for supplies that will make life easier for Sparks.  When the roamer comes to town with a portion of a book, a book entitled "For the People of Ember", the deal is sealed.  Doon and Ember will risk wolves and robbers to search for supplies and try to unravel the mystery of the book.
