It's
been four long years since Rebecca Whittier has seen her friends in New
Bedford. Her father is the captain of the whaler Vigilance and the family
has been aboard for a long time. Rebecca hopes that they find enough whales
soon so she can return home. Life aboard a whaling ship in 1844 is not
an easy life. The food is full of insects, the men are unruly and Rebecca
is forced to stay below decks most of the time. Her younger brother is
not restricted and is allowed to help the men. When the men catch two whales
on one day, Rebecca hopes that their journey may be coming to an end. As
she and her mother bake a special treat of donuts for the men to celebrate,
a strong wind picks up. As the night approaches, the wind gets stronger.
Little do they know that they are heading right into a hurricane. Rebecca
finds herself fighting for survival along side a young indentured servant. |
