It was only once, but Helen falls pregnant by her boyfriend, Chris, shortly after she reaches eighteen.  In order to deal with her shock and anxiety, she begins writing letters to her baby, addressed to "Dear Nobody."  What starts as a hopeful story of a young woman about to embark on a college music scholarship transforms into a story of internal struggle and shattered dreams.  While the story outline may be similar to many others, the way the book is formatted, with a mixture of narration and personal letters, and the way that the author plunges into the emotions of both Helen and Chris, makes it a worthy read.
