People in Smallville are disappearing. At least, that’s what Gloria Alvarez said, but no one else seems to know about it. Then again, there are lots of other things on Clark Kent’s mind. For one thing, there are these abilities that distract him during class as he hears everything going around him, and he might have accidentally overturned a semi while trying to save a produce stand. However, with his powers he is able to help out during a helicopter crash, saving Bryan Mankins, who soon becomes one of his friends. Meanwhile, Clark’s best friend Lana Lang is convinced there is something fishy going on with the Mankins Corporation that moved into town and is buying up family farms. With Clark’s assistance she’s determined to get to the bottom of the issue. Despite the charity work that Clark hears about from Bryan, something does seem wrong. Attempted burglaries, aerial footage of family farms, military men digging up craters. Their town is changing, and if they don’t get to the bottom of this it may be too late for those who have vanished. It’s hard enough to be a teenager with powers that Clark has to hide, but knowing when and how to use them is a struggle all on it’s own. (Oklahoma Sequoyah Book Awards, 2021)
