On August 24, 79 C.E., the city of Pompeii in Italy was buried under tons of lava when Mt. Vesuvius erupted.  Over 20,000 people were lost in the lava and ash.  This is the story of the eruption and how the ruins of the city were uncovered many years later.  What makes the ruins of Pompeii extraordinary is that many of the bodies were preserved in the ash.
