The Scorch Trials is the second book in The Maze Runner series.  In the first book Thomas and the Gladers were consumed with solving the Maze and returning to earth; but having succeeded, they weren’t prepared to find the earth a wasteland. Cranks, people infected with the Flare who are murderously insane and covered in festering wounds, are roaming the earth looking for victims. Rather than being done with their quest, the Gladers are faced with another trial, which is crossing the Scorch, a burned out desert, in two weeks to arrive at a safe haven. To complicate matters the boys have been infected with the Flare, but are promised a cure if they succeed. However, they are hunted by the Cranks and WICKED has created obstacles at every turn. As Thomas and his friends are on the run, he struggles to protect them and at the same time find Teresa, the only girl from the Glade.  The final book in the trilogy, The Death Cure, is available now as well.  (Sharon Nehls for Colorado Blue Spruce Award, 2013)
