In 1863 eleven-year-old Emmy Blue is sad to leave her grandparents, best friend, and familiar life in Illinois when her father decides to move their family to Colorado. They will make the long journey as part of a wagon train, and her grandmother gives her quilt pieces to sew as she walks across the country. Emmy hates quilting and isn’t excited about the present. During her quilt walk, however, Emmy sees the country and learns about herself.
