“Mr. Ruby’s eyes turned red and watery when he told us about the Tet Offensive. “They caught us by surprise, and we’ve lost too many”- his voice trembled, and we all listened, dead silent, ……………… This is just one of many days in Mr. Ruby’s class as they discuss the war efforts in Vietnam. Days filled with tears, anger, and tension. Ashe has to learn to deal with the atrocity of war and the headlines of numbers of soldiers killed each week on top of an ongoing war at home. Dad is as dogmatic as Mom is an activist and peace-lover. How will the ever reach a reconciliation? Then the new girl; a tall, beautiful blond goddess shows up in Mr. Ruby’s class and Ashe is completely smitten. Now how does he hide the fact that his girlfriend is a hippie, ant-war activist just like mom from his dad? Things go from bad to worse quickly when Mom announced she is pregnant. The problem is that it is definitely not Dad’s baby. (Prepared by: Wendy S. Tyree, Green Sea Floyds High School, South Carolina Young Adult Book nominee 2017)
