This
story takes place in mid-nineteenth century Japan. Manjiro is a fifteen
year old boy who must assume the role of head of household following the
death of his father. He joins a fishing expedition to provide for his family.
The fishing boat is destroyed in a storm and Manjiro finds himself stranded
on a deserted island. After many months on the island, Manjiro and his
fellow sailors are rescued by the crew of an American whaling ship. The
Americans are kind to Manjiro and he learns their customs and they teach
him their whaling techniques. Will Manjiro ever make it home to his family?
