This story takes place in mid-nineteenth century Japan. Manjiro is a fifteen year old boy who must assume the role of head of household following the death of his father. He joins a fishing expedition to provide for his family. The fishing boat is destroyed in a storm and Manjiro finds himself stranded on a deserted island. After many months on the island, Manjiro and his fellow sailors are rescued by the crew of an American whaling ship.
