Casey lives in a New York apartment with her stepmother Sylvia. Well, she did, until this morning. Everything started normally. When Casey came home, she found $55 in an envelope taped to the refrigerator and Sylvia never comes back. It won’t take long for the $55 to run out and Casey is scared. She doesn’t want to report Sylvia and get her into trouble, so she goes on as if everything is normal. She goes to school and returns to her apartment everyday.

Paulie, a teenage boy who lives with the apartment building’s superintendent, figures out that Casey is alone. He knows she needs money and he has a plan. Casey could get in big trouble for this, but she is desperate. Will Casey Say Yes?  (Melissa Bowman, Melissa.Bowman@pisd.edu, Armstrong Middle School,  Lone Star Book Award nominee, 2003-2004)
