Are mermaids real? Well Annette Kellerman was real. This Australian athlete was a sickly child who started swimming to strengthen her legs. As she grew up, she became a strong swimmer and an innovator. Annette had always wanted to dance, so she created water ballet. Annette Kellerman was a household name in her day. Not only did she attempt to swim the English Channel but she performed for the Queen of England, although she had to make a few adjustments to her bathing costume. She was even arrested in the United States for her scandalous swim suit. This plucky swimmer will be admired by all.  (Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award nominee, 2011)
